Of course, nonprofit organizations use volunteers to do as much of their work as they can. Volunteers often play a special role in the solicitation process. They are often given a list of prospects to contact and then report back on the status of the call.
Managing volunteers can be very challenging. Since their involvement is likely time limited, it's probably not a good idea to spend a week training them on how to use your database system. It's also important to note that since you have very specific rules dictating what information should go where in your system, you would probably not want your volunteers to "wing it" and insert data here and there as best they can. That would be a complete disaster for your database. Imagine telling people to just put everything anywhere in your filling cabinets. You'd never find anything.
It's also challenging when your volunteers are heavily involved in your organization's relationship building activities. The information gathered in these types of activities can be extremely diverse and may need special handling on a case-by-case basis. This further complicates your database entry process. Who should do the data entry? It may be risky to let volunteers do it. Should you have a data control staff or should you have a volunteer assistant trained for that specific purpose? The answers to these questions may depend on how your organization is structured. The solution is not always simple.
